Kevin Day
Kevin Day was born in 1973 in South shields. His natural talent for painting and drawing was recognised from a very young age when he recieved an oil painting set as a gift from his mother. During his childhood his talent was nurtured and encouraged by his mother and grandfather who were also naturally talented artists.
Following a standard secondary education Kevin attended the local college and then university studying art and design, where he graduated with a diploma in illustration.
At this time he was more interested in his other love, which was music. After college and a few years giging around on home ground he started a career as a professional musician playing guitar in a band.
After leaving his music career behind Kevin resorted to getting a "proper job" where he ended up working as a delivery driver. However in 2004 he began to concentrate more seriously on painting as a profession and doing part time delivery work for extra income.
His previous paintings where mostly landscapes of Northumberland and The Lake District. Now his work has progressed into focusing on combination of people in cityscapes and considering the relationship between the two. Kevin's work takes influence from many areas, apart from the traditional inspiration's such as Rembrant, Turner, Vermeer, Singer Sargent and Hopper. Kevin also taks much influence from film.
More recently Kevin's career as an artisttook an upward turn when he won a regional figurative art competition voted by the public for 'GIRL AWAKE'in September2007 at THE ARTWORKS GALLERY, Newcastle. Then in December 2007 Kevin won Alexander Millers Apprentice featured on BBC Looknorth. As part of the prize for the competition Kevin was offered a publishing contract with one of the counties largest art publishers but after much consideration he decided not to take up the offer, preferring to have freedom and independence to allow his work to develop naturally.
He admits that he is still learning and has only now found his true direction with his work.
